Weekly Market Wrap | 16 - 20 Febraury 2026

Markets ended the week modestly higher, with banking and financial stocks leading; midcaps faced profit booking after early gains, while select small/mid names delivered strong individual performances.

Key Events During the Week

Strong Rally

Indian markets snapped a losing streak with a significant rebound - the Sensex jumped roughly 650 points and the Nifty climbed over 200 points, led by gains in banks, power & financial counters.

Sharp Sell-off

Mid-week saw heavy selling pressure. Major indices including the Nifty 50 and Sensex fell significantly, with broad sector weakness and mid- & small-cap underperformance.

Volatile Week End Recovery

On Friday, markets recovered part of the losses from Thursday, with Nifty closing above key psychological support and strong participation from banking, metals, and PSU stocks.

Key Highlights

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court dealt a major blow to Trump’s global tariff program, prompting Trump to sign a new temporary tariff order and sharply criticize the justices while maintaining key trade relationships.

1. US Supreme Court Struck Down Trump’s Global Tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that President Donald Trump lacked authority to impose sweeping tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, significantly undermining a cornerstone of his trade strategy. This decision could affect over $175 billion in revenue and lead to possible refunds.

2. Trump Responds - New 10% Global Tariff Order

In response to the court setback, Trump signed an executive order imposing a temporary 10% global import duty under a different legal section (Trade Act §122) intended to address “fundamental international payment problems.

3. India-U.S. Trade Deal Unaffected

Trump said that the India-U.S. trade agreement will remain intact despite the tariff ruling, which helped calm some market concerns regarding bilateral commerce.

Weekly Market Takeaway

Markets witnessed a volatile trading week marked by sharp intra-week swings. Early optimism gave way to mid-week profit booking, especially across mid and small caps, before a recovery toward the end of the week helped benchmarks close modestly higher. Investor sentiment remained cautious as global trade uncertainty resurfaced following the U.S. tariff ruling, adding to near-term volatility. Despite the choppiness, selective stocks delivered strong gains, highlighting continued opportunities in fundamentally sound names.

Conclusion

The week underscored the importance of staying disciplined amid heightened volatility. While broader markets showed resilience, uneven participation and sharp stock-specific moves suggest a phase of consolidation rather than broad-based momentum. Global developments are likely to keep markets reactive in the short term. Investors are advised to remain selective, avoid chasing overheated stocks, and focus on quality businesses with strong fundamentals while maintaining prudent asset allocation.
